The evening before, Flauschi places a closed oat jar on a low shelf of the fridge in the back corner. Puschel waves goodnight to the oats; the oven remains beside it.

Puschel’s Sleepy Overnight Oats

Wednesday: Overnight oats with yogurt and banana. A little breakfast story with Puschel and Flauschi.

The little story

Wake Up, Little Oats!

On Tuesday evening Puschel and Flauschi stood in their warm kitchen. They wanted to prepare breakfast for the next morning. Flauschi set two clean little jars on the low table. Puschel divided oats between them and carefully poured in milk.

Puschel„Are the oats having a milk bath today?“
Flauschi„Yes. With a little plain yogurt, they can soften overnight in the fridge.“

They stirred thoroughly, closed the jars and refrigerated them straight away in the back corner. Puschel waved at the closed door. The banana would wait until morning.

Puschel„Good night, little oats. Please do not snore!“

On Wednesday morning Flauschi brought out the jars. The oats had absorbed the liquid and softened. Puschel peered inside. He leaned closer and raised one paw as if greeting a very sleepy friend.

Puschel„Wake up! It is Wednesday. The spoons are here already.“
Flauschi„I do not think the oats can hear us. But they are ready for breakfast.“

Flauschi opened the jars and added fresh banana slices. Puschel studied the pale rounds and nodded happily. Then he picked up his spoon and waited until both were sitting comfortably.

Puschel„Now our sleepyheads even have yellow breakfast pillows.“
Flauschi„Bananas. Today these pillows may be eaten.“

Puschel tried a spoonful. The oats were pleasantly soft, and the banana was sweet enough without extra sugar. Flauschi added cups of water. There had been hardly any preparation that morning, leaving a little time to chat.

Puschel„Tomorrow the oats should work for us again while we sleep.“
Flauschi„They are not working. They are soaking. But it is handy anyway.“

Puschel grinned and thanked his almost empty jar. They washed their spoons and headed out. No alarm had rung for the oats, yet they had been ready precisely in time for Wednesday breakfast.

Preparation: about 5 min the evening before · Soaking: about 8 hr in the fridge · Morning: about 2 min for the banana

Serves 2 · Adjust quantities to appetite

How to make it

In a few words: Soak oats with milk and yoghurt overnight in the fridge. Add banana in the morning.

Ingredients

  • 80 g fine rolled oats
  • 200 ml milk, plus a little more in the morning if needed
  • 100 g plain unsweetened yogurt
  • 1 small banana
  • Equipment: 2 clean lidded jars or containers, spoons and a fridge

Method

  1. The evening before, wash hands. Divide oats, milk and yogurt between two clean jars or containers and mix thoroughly.
  2. Close and refrigerate immediately, allowing about 8 hours to soak overnight. Do not leave at room temperature.
  3. Next morning stir. An adult cuts the freshly peeled banana into suitable pieces; children add them. Add a little milk if too thick.
  4. Eat chilled or take briefly from the fridge and eat straight away. Use the next morning and keep any remaining portions continuously chilled until then.

Make it fit your morning

Quantities are for ordinary family kitchens. Wusel portions and furniture are smaller in the illustrations. Offer water or unsweetened tea. Adjust ingredients to appetite and season; no sweetening is needed. For a plant-based version choose suitable unsweetened alternatives to milk, yogurt, quark or cheese and check bread/rolls for milk, butter and honey.
