VegetarianPuschel’s Pepper Rainbow Roll
Friday: Wholegrain roll with herb quark and pepper. A little breakfast story with Puschel and Flauschi.
The little story
A Rainbow to Bite Into
On Friday Puschel was already in the kitchen with a small basket of rolls. Flauschi fetched quark from the fridge in the back corner. Fresh herbs and washed red, yellow and orange pepper pieces lay on the table. Golden morning light came through both round windows.
Puschel„Today our roll is wearing something colourful. It is almost the weekend!“
Flauschi„Let us stir the herb quark first.“
Flauschi finely chopped the herbs and prepared short, thin pepper strips. She halved the wholegrain rolls and put the knife away. Puschel stirred the quark with a little water until creamy. When the herbs went in, he peered into the bowl.
Puschel„A little green meadow in white quark.“
Flauschi„And the pepper will add the colours.“
They spread the roll halves. Puschel placed three short pepper strips side by side on his. Red, yellow and orange shone against the herb quark. He lifted his little roll with both paws and proudly showed Flauschi.
Puschel„A rainbow to bite into!“
Flauschi„Your rainbow has only three colours today. But it fits your breakfast perfectly.“
Puschel wanted to add more strips. Then he noticed how little space remained and chose an extra plate instead. The spare pieces could wait there without slipping off the roll. Flauschi finished her own colourful half.
Puschel„So the rainbow gets a parking place.“
Flauschi„A pepper parking place. And we get room to eat.“
Both sat on the little chairs, added water and took careful bites. The pepper crunched, the quark tasted fresh with herbs and Puschel’s rainbow grew smaller with every bite. He studied the last colours happily.
Puschel„Does the weekend start when the rainbow is gone?“
Flauschi„First our Friday begins. The weekend comes afterwards.“
Puschel nodded. A friendly Friday would be useful. They finished calmly and refrigerated the remaining quark. Then they cleared their plates.
Puschel„Good. I shall take the crunch with me today.“
Flauschi laughed and opened the door. The two Wusels headed out, ready for their morning with a colourful idea in mind. The final pepper strip had made it straight to breakfast.
Preparation: about 10 min · No cooking or baking
Serves 2 · Adjust quantities to appetite
How to make it
In a few words: Mix quark with herbs and spread on wholemeal rolls. Add pepper strips.
Ingredients
- 2 small wholegrain rolls, about 120–140 g total
- 150 g plain quark
- 1–2 tbsp water to loosen
- 1 small bell pepper or about 150 g mixed-colour pepper pieces
- 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh parsley or chives

Method
- Wash hands, pepper and herbs. An adult removes pepper stalk and seeds and cuts the flesh into short, thin, suitably small strips. Finely chop herbs.
- Children stir quark with a little water until creamy and mix in herbs.
- An adult halves the rolls. Children spread the halves with herb quark and add a few pepper strips. Offer remaining pepper alongside.
- Sit down to eat together with water. Promptly refrigerate remaining quark and cut pepper.
Make it fit your morning
Quantities are for ordinary family kitchens. Wusel portions and furniture are smaller in the illustrations. Offer water or unsweetened tea. Adjust ingredients to appetite and season; no sweetening is needed. For a plant-based version choose suitable unsweetened alternatives to milk, yogurt, quark or cheese and check bread/rolls for milk, butter and honey.
