Flauschi’s Cucumber Train Cheese Sandwich

Tuesday: Wholegrain bread with cheese, cucumber and apple. A little breakfast story with Puschel and Flauschi.

The little story

The Train Goes to Breakfast

On Tuesday a little wholegrain loaf rested on the kitchen table. Flauschi fetched cheese from the fridge in the back corner while Puschel washed cucumber and apple. Breakfast would be quick today; afterwards they wanted to look at the golden leaves outside.

Puschel„I shall manage the cucumber traffic!“
Flauschi„Wash your paws first, Mr Traffic Manager.“

Flauschi sliced bread, cucumber and apple on the stable board. Once the knife was away, Puschel put thin cheese slices on the bread. He lined up three little cucumber rounds on one sandwich. He nudged the first forward and made a very important face.

Puschel„Please stand back! The cucumber train is arriving.“
Flauschi„Where is it going?“
Puschel„To Breakfast Station. Right next to my tummy.“

Flauschi giggled. She made a simple sandwich and put apple pieces on a little plate. Puschel wanted a longer train, but the bread had run out. An extra cucumber slice could only fit beside it on his plate.

Flauschi„That carriage needs no track. It can wait beside the train.“

Puschel studied the spare slice and nodded. Every carriage now had a safe place. They added two cups of water and sat on their low chairs. Before taking a bite, Puschel leaned toward his sandwich.

Puschel„Next stop: Crunchington!“

It really did crunch. Flauschi laughed so warmly that Puschel paused his chewing. Then they ate calmly. With each bite the train grew shorter, and the apple plate emptied too.

Flauschi„Your train has a very short timetable today.“
Puschel„Only one journey. But a very happy one.“

They put away the remaining bread and refrigerated the cheese. The leaves were waiting outside. Puschel opened the door and quietly said Puschel“Choo-choo”. Flauschi followed, laughing: a cucumber train had put their Tuesday on a cheerful track.

Preparation: about 10 min · No cooking or baking

Serves 2 · Adjust quantities to appetite

How to make it

In a few words: Top wholemeal bread with cheese and cucumber and serve with apple.

Ingredients

  • 4 small slices wholegrain bread, about 120–160 g total
  • 50 g mild cheese made with microbial or vegetarian rennet
  • 100 g cucumber
  • 1 small apple
  • Equipment: board, knife for adults, 2 plates and water cups

Method

  1. Wash hands, cucumber and apple. An adult thinly slices cucumber, cores the apple and cuts or grates it appropriately for age.
  2. An adult slices the bread and cheese if needed. Children add cheese and cucumber to the bread.
  3. Put remaining cucumber and apple beside the sandwiches. Offer water and sit down to eat together.
  4. Refrigerate remaining cheese and cut cucumber; store bread dry.

Make it fit your morning

Quantities are for ordinary family kitchens. Wusel portions and furniture are smaller in the illustrations. Offer water or unsweetened tea. Adjust ingredients to appetite and season; no sweetening is needed. For a plant-based version choose suitable unsweetened alternatives to milk, yogurt, quark or cheese and check bread/rolls for milk, butter and honey.
