Flauschi’s Warm Pear Islands

Thursday: Warm pear porridge. A little breakfast story with Puschel and Flauschi.

The little story

The Spoon Takes the Ferry

On Thursday the wind rustled the leaves outside the kitchen windows. Inside it was cosy. Flauschi put a small saucepan on the hob beside the fridge. Puschel laid two bowls and spoons on the low table.

Puschel„Today I would like something warm that arrives in my tummy slowly.“
Flauschi„Let us make pear porridge. You can get the bowls ready.“

Flauschi washed the pear and finely grated most of it. She cooked the oats with milk and water over gentle heat, stirring. Puschel stayed at the cool table. He watched a leaf sail past the window and quietly told it about their breakfast.

Once the porridge was ready, Flauschi stirred in the grated pear. She filled the bowls, set them on the table and let everything cool sufficiently. Only when pleasantly warm did she add a few suitably small, thin pear pieces.

Puschel„There are islands floating in it!“
Flauschi„The pear pieces are resting on top. But they probably look like islands to your spoon.“

Puschel studied his bowl. Three pale pieces rested in the creamy porridge. He lifted one small piece with his spoon and held it above the bowl so nothing dripped onto the table.

Puschel„My ferry is going to Pear Island. There is only one seat aboard.“
Flauschi„Take small passengers, then. Large ones fit less comfortably on a breakfast spoon.“

Both laughed. Puschel set down the spoon, checked the temperature with Flauschi once more and took a small bite. The porridge was soft and the pear mild. They sat comfortably, drank water and talked about the colourful leaves outside.

Puschel„The ferry knows the way now. It always travels from the bowl to me.“
Flauschi„A short journey with a cosy pause in between.“

The wind kept passing the window. Puschel slowly steered his spoon through the last pear island. Even his imagination did not need to hurry today.

Puschel„This Thursday tastes like arriving.“

Flauschi smiled. Together they cleared the cool table. The hot saucepan stayed out of reach until it cooled too. Then their little breakfast ferry was ready for a new day.

Preparation: about 5 min · Cooking: about 5–8 min · Cooling: about 5 min, longer if needed · Total: about 15–18 min

How to make it

In a few words: Cook oats in milk and water, stir in pear and let cool slightly.

Ingredients

  • 80 g fine rolled oats
  • 300 ml milk and 100 ml water
  • 1 small ripe pear, about 150 g
  • Optional: a small pinch of cinnamon
  • Equipment: small saucepan, stirring spoon, grater, knife for adults, board and 2 bowls

Method

  1. Wash hands. An adult washes and cores the pear, finely grates most of it and cuts a few thin, suitably small pieces for decoration. Adults handle the grater and knife.
  2. An adult puts oats, milk and water in a small saucepan, heats while stirring and gently simmers over low heat for about 5–8 minutes. Add a little water if needed.
  3. Remove from heat. Stir in grated pear and a little cinnamon if desired, then divide between two bowls.
  4. Cool for several minutes, longer if needed. An adult checks the temperature: pleasantly warm, never hot. Add suitably small pear pieces or grate the entire pear finely.
  5. Sit down to eat together. Children can prepare bowls and water cups at the cool table; adults handle the hob and hot saucepan.

Make it fit your morning

Quantities are for ordinary family kitchens. Wusel portions and furniture are smaller in the illustrations. Offer water or unsweetened tea. Adjust ingredients to appetite and season; no sweetening is needed. For a plant-based version choose suitable unsweetened alternatives to milk, yogurt, quark or cheese and check bread/rolls for milk, butter and honey.
