VegetarianPuschel’s Apple Oat Breakfast
Monday: Plain yogurt with oats and apple. A little breakfast story with Puschel and Flauschi.
The little story
The Missing Apple Nose
On Monday a sunbeam tickled Puschel’s nose. He blinked at the round kitchen windows and set two bowls on the low table. Flauschi brought plain yogurt from the fridge in the back corner. Oats and a freshly washed apple waited beside the bowls.
Puschel„Today our breakfast is getting a face. Then it will look much more awake than I do!“
Flauschi„Let us make it a friendly one.“
Flauschi cut the apple into small pieces on a stable board and put the knife away. Puschel stirred oats into the yogurt. Then he added two apple eyes and a curved smile. A small apple piece became the nose. A little cinnamon scented the bowls.
Puschel„Good morning, Mr Breakfast. Your nose looks very crunchy.“
Puschel lifted the nose with one paw, just to check whether it fitted. Then he nibbled it, just to check whether it was fresh. When Flauschi sat down, the space between the apple eyes was empty.
Flauschi„Puschel, your breakfast cannot sniff any more.“
Puschel„Its nose has stepped out for a quality check.“
Flauschi pointed at the empty spot and giggled. Puschel put another apple nose there. He studied it. It could not study him back, of course, but it looked delicious. His paw was already hovering over the bowl again.
Flauschi„Perhaps the second nose could stay until the first proper spoonful?“
Puschel„Good idea. Then the face and I can start eating together.“
They settled on their little chairs and ate calmly. The apple crunched, the oats softened in the yogurt and Flauschi talked about her plans. Puschel listened until his next spoonful went straight through the apple smile.
Puschel„It has stopped grinning. Now I am doing the grinning!“
Flauschi laughed. They cleared their bowls after breakfast. Monday was still Monday, but apple crunch and a shared smile had made it feel friendly already.
Preparation: about 5 min · No cooking or baking
Serves 2 · Adjust quantities to appetite
How to make it
In a few words: Mix yoghurt with oats and add chopped or grated apple.
Ingredients
- 80 g fine rolled oats
- 300 g plain unsweetened yogurt
- 1 small apple, about 150 g
- Optional: a small pinch of cinnamon
- Equipment: 2 bowls, spoons, chopping board and a knife for adults
Method
- Wash hands. An adult washes and cores the apple and cuts it into suitable small pieces, or finely grates it for younger children.
- Children divide yogurt and oats between two bowls and stir. Let soften for a few minutes if preferred.
- Add apple pieces or grated apple. If desired, arrange a face from pre-cut pieces and sprinkle with a little cinnamon.
- Sit down to eat together. Refrigerate remaining yogurt promptly.
Make it fit your morning
Quantities are for ordinary family kitchens. Wusel portions and furniture are smaller in the illustrations. Offer water or unsweetened tea. Adjust ingredients to appetite and season; no sweetening is needed. For a plant-based version choose suitable unsweetened alternatives to milk, yogurt, quark or cheese and check bread/rolls for milk, butter and honey.
