Puschel’s Chilled Chocolate Biscuit Slices

A no-bake German chocolate biscuit cake known as Kalter Hund: crisp butter biscuits and creamy chocolate layers become Puschel’s chilled chocolate slices.

The little story

Layer by Layer to Chocolate Happiness

A loaf tin lined with baking paper was waiting in the Wusel kitchen. Flauschi set the cooled chocolate cream beside it while Puschel counted the butter biscuits.

Puschel“Twelve, thirteen, fourteen … I could build a wonderful biscuit tower with these.”
Flauschi“Today we had better build sideways. One chocolate layer, one biscuit layer, and then the same again.”

Puschel picked up a small stack with both paws. He held it a little crooked, but not a single biscuit fell. Meanwhile, Flauschi smoothed the first chocolate layer neatly.

Puschel“See? Today I am the most reliable biscuit stacker in the whole Wusel Forest.”

Together they filled the tin layer by layer. Only Puschel’s nose came a tiny bit too close to the chocolate cream. It left a chocolatey smudge that he did not notice at all.

Flauschi“Your biscuit stack is very tidy. But it seems your nose has already had a taste.”
Puschel“That is part of a careful chocolate inspection.”

They both laughed and put the tin in the fridge. A few hours later, they cut into the chilled cake. Every slice showed pale biscuits and dark chocolate in little stripes.

Preparation: about 25 minutes · Heating: about 10 minutes · Chilling: at least 4 hours · Total: about 4 hours 35 minutes

Makes one loaf, about 12 slices

How to make it

In a few words: Layer biscuits and chocolate cream in a tin and chill for at least four hours.

Ingredients

  • 250 g rectangular butter biscuits
  • 200 g dark chocolate
  • 100 g milk chocolate
  • 150 ml double cream
  • 60 g coconut oil
  • 1 sachet vanilla sugar, about 8 g
  • 1 small pinch of salt

Method

  1. Line a loaf tin about 25 cm long with baking paper, leaving enough paper over the sides to lift the cake later. An adult helps with this.
  2. Finely chop both kinds of chocolate. Gently warm the cream and coconut oil in a saucepan until the oil has melted. Do not let it boil. An adult handles this step.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the chocolate, vanilla sugar and salt, then stir slowly until smooth. Leave the cream to cool for a few minutes.
  4. Spread a thin layer of chocolate cream over the base of the tin. Place a close-fitting layer of butter biscuits on top; an adult can cut pieces to fit the edges.
  5. Continue alternating chocolate cream and biscuits until they are used up. Finish with a chocolate layer.
  6. Cover the tin and chill for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  7. Lift the chilled cake from the tin using the baking paper. An adult cuts it into narrow slices with a sharp knife.
