Puschel’s Apple Wusel Crumble

Juicy apples, cinnamon and golden oat crumble become a warm family dessert—with a tiny cinnamon cloud and a real crumble nose.

The little story

A Basket Full of Crunchy Ideas

On a golden autumn morning, Flauschi had set out oats, flour, butter, cinnamon and the large red baking dish. Then she heard a determined scraping sound across the wooden floor.

Puschel„I brought apples. Enough for a small crumble. Or a medium one. Or the entire Wusel Forest.“

Puschel pulled a basket filled to the top beside the table. Flauschi looked at the apples and then at the dish, which would hold only a small part of them.

Flauschi„We will begin with four apples. We can save the rest for our next crunchy ideas.“
Puschel seasons the apple pieces too enthusiastically and gets a small cinnamon cloud on his nose while Flauschi mixes the oat crumble
One little shake becomes a surprising cinnamon cloud.

Once the apple pieces were in the dish, Puschel was allowed to sprinkle the cinnamon. He shook carefully, then a little less carefully. The loose lid tipped and a small fragrant cloud landed on his nose.

Puschel„At least I now know exactly what autumn smells like.“

Flauschi mixed oats, flour, butter and sugar into golden crumble. Together they scattered it over the apples until not one piece looked cold.

When the crumble came from the oven warm and crisp, they filled two bowls. Puschel leaned so close for a sniff that three golden oat clusters settled on his now clean nose.

The crumble is ready—and three crunchy pieces find a favourite place.
Flauschi„They look as though they have found their favourite place.“
Puschel„Then I had better taste them before they grow roots there.“

Flauschi giggled, Puschel ate the three crunchy pieces and they shared the warm apple crumble. The large basket was already waiting for their next idea.

How to make it

In a few words: Cover apple pieces with crumble topping and bake until the apples are soft.

Ingredients

  • 4 tart apples, about 600 g
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 60 g rolled oats
  • 80 g plain flour
  • 60 g cold butter
  • 40 g soft brown sugar
  • 1 small pinch of salt
  • plain yoghurt or vanilla quark to serve, optional
  • A little butter to grease the baking dish

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C conventional heat and lightly grease a medium baking dish. An adult handles this step.
  2. Wash the apples. An adult removes the cores and cuts the apples into pieces about 2 cm wide. Peeling is optional.
  3. Mix the apple pieces with the lemon juice and half the cinnamon, then spread them in the dish.
  4. Combine the oats, flour, sugar, salt and remaining cinnamon. Add the cold butter in small pieces and use clean fingertips or a fork to make coarse crumble.
  5. Scatter the crumble evenly over the apples. An adult places the dish in the oven.
  6. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the apples are soft and the topping is golden. An adult removes the hot dish.
  7. Leave to cool slightly and serve with a spoonful of plain yoghurt or vanilla quark if you like.
