Sound story

A Morning in Wuselwood

A read-aloud story that lets children bring the forest to life with simple sounds.

8–12 minutesOptional: shaker, rhythm sticks or xylophoneAbout ages 6–10
Puschel listens carefully while Flauschi points towards a woodpecker in the autumn forest.

How to begin

Choose three sounds: rustle leaves with your hands or a shaker; tap footsteps with fingers or rhythm sticks; make sunshine with one bright note or a soft “pling”. Hands and voices work without instruments. Wait for each sound cue.

The story

01

The first leaves

As morning grew bright, Puschel carefully opened the door. Leaves danced across the path outside their home. Puschel“The forest is awake already!” he whispered. Flauschi joined him and listened.

Join-in cue: Leaves: gently rub your hands together or shake softly.

02

Little footsteps

They walked slowly between the trees. Puschel put one paw in front of the other. Puschel“Can you hear that?” he asked. Flauschi“Our footsteps,” said Flauschi. Flauschi“When we go slowly, we can hear much more.”

Join-in cue: Footsteps: tap four quiet beats with fingers or rhythm sticks.

03

A bird calls out

Higher up, a great spotted woodpecker tapped on a tree. Puschel stopped. Flauschi pointed upwards. Flauschi“That is the bird. We can stay down here and listen.”

Join-in cue: Bird: tap twice, very softly, with two fingers.

04

A bright moment

A sunbeam slipped between the branches and touched Puschel’s nose. Puschel“Even the sunshine found me!” Flauschi giggled. They stood still for a moment while the forest sounded around them.

Join-in cue: Sunshine: play one bright note or say a soft “pling”. Then pause.

05

The forest keeps sounding

On the way home they heard leaves, footsteps and the bird again. Puschel“We did not have to find anything,” Puschel said. Puschel“We just listened.” Flauschi nodded. Flauschi“And every sound had its own place.”

Join-in cue: Leaves, then footsteps, then bird – one after another, quietly, with pauses.

Afterwards
