VegetarianPuschel and Flauschi’s Sunday Brunch
Smiling melon faces, fresh orange juice and a bread roll with a roof: a colourful Sunday brunch with fruit, wholegrain bread, cheese and time together.
The little story
Sunday Is Wearing a Bread Roll
On Sunday the sunlight crept slowly through the two round kitchen windows. Puschel thought it looked remarkably like breakfast. Flauschi fetched cheese from the tall fridge in the back corner, then kept it chilled until they finished preparing.
Puschel„Today we are having such a cosy breakfast that lunch can join in a little!“
Flauschi„That is called brunch. Breakfast and lunch meet at the same table.“
Puschel nodded very seriously. Then he carried the little bread basket to the table. One roll perched at an angle on another like a tiny hat. Flauschi brought a melon and stopped beside him, giggling.
Puschel„My bread rolls have dressed up especially.“
Flauschi„Then the melon can celebrate too. First, let us wash our hands and the fruit.“
They washed their hands thoroughly, rinsed the fruit and cucumber and washed the melon rind too. Flauschi cut the melon into small pieces on a steady board. Puschel waited at the clear table with the plates. Flauschi had space and quiet for cutting.
Puschel used two pre-cut melon crescents to make a wide smile on his plate. Two apple pieces became eyes and a strawberry piece a nose. He moved the nose a tiny bit to the left.
Puschel„My breakfast is looking at me! Do you think it knows what is about to happen?“
Flauschi„It certainly looks very pleased.“
Flauschi made a smaller melon smile on her plate. Puschel held the two fruit faces side by side and grinned as broadly as his melon smile.

Puschel„Our fruit is awake already. Now all we need are the oranges.“
Flauschi halved the washed oranges and put the knife away. The little hand juicer stood securely on the table. Puschel stepped up as if he were operating a very important machine. Flauschi held the first small glass ready.
Puschel pressed an orange half onto the cone and slowly turned it back and forth. He pursed his lips, drew his eyebrows together and made a very determined face. Golden juice collected in the bowl below.
Puschel„This orange is quite strong. But I can keep going!“
Flauschi„You do not need to challenge it to a contest. A gentle turn is enough.“
Puschel tried it. Sure enough, calm movements made it much easier. They took turns, poured the juice through the strainer and filled a little glass for each of them. They set out water too. The fruit stayed on the plates to eat.

Puschel„A little sunshine to drink! And the melon smile is still waiting.“
Next came bread, rolls and cheese. Flauschi sliced the cheese thinly and cut the cucumber. Puschel built his roll: first cheese, then two cucumber slices. He held the top of the roll above it and studied his creation from the side.
Puschel„I am building a breakfast house. The cucumbers will be the roof!“
Flauschi„And where is the top of your bread roll going to live?“
Puschel looked at the top in his paw. Then at the sloping cucumbers. Then back at the top. Flauschi showed him her flat sandwich, where everything fitted comfortably.
Puschel„Perhaps it would rather be a breakfast garden. That does not need a roof.“

Laughing, he laid the cucumbers flat and put the top on. They set only small bowls and their plates on the table. The rest of the bread basket and some fruit stayed within reach on the existing counter. That left plenty of room for paws and glasses.
At last both sat on their low chairs. In front of them were cheese sandwiches, bread rolls, cucumber and colourful fruit. Their little juice glasses glowed and the water sparkled in its jug. Puschel held his cheese sandwich with both paws and sighed happily.
Puschel„This is what Sunday tastes like. Crunchy and unhurried.“
Flauschi„And shared with someone who is delighted by a melon nose.“

They ate, chatted and shared the last apple pieces. When Puschel looked for his fruit face again, only one little melon piece remained on the plate.
Puschel„Our breakfast has stopped smiling. Now it is our turn!“
Flauschi laughed. Outside, Sunday drifted slowly onward, as though it still had a bread roll of its own to finish.
Preparation: about 35 min · No cooking or baking · Then enjoy an unhurried breakfast together
Serves 4 · a breakfast to share
How to make it
In a few words: Cut fruit, top bread with cheese and cucumber and squeeze fresh orange juice.
Ingredients
- 4 small wholegrain bread rolls and 4 thin slices of wholegrain bread, about 400–450 g in total; adjust to appetite
- 160 g mild sliced cheese made with microbial or explicitly vegetarian rennet
- ½ small melon, about 400 g edible flesh; remove hard seeds
- 2 small apples and 200 g strawberries or other fresh seasonal fruit; optionally a few blueberries for the fruit faces
- ½ cucumber, about 200 g
- 4–6 juicing oranges to make about 400 ml fresh juice in total; yield depends on size and juiciness
- A jug of drinking water
- Equipment: stable chopping board, sharp knife for adults, small manual citrus juicer with strainer, bowls, plates and 4 small juice glasses
Method
- Wash hands together and prepare the table. Wash fruit and cucumber thoroughly under running water, including the melon rind before cutting. Keep cheese refrigerated until shortly before serving.
- An adult cuts the melon on a stable board, removes rind and hard seeds, then cuts the flesh into suitable small pieces. Core apples, hull strawberries and cut everything into bite-sized pieces. Adjust pieces to the children’s age and ability to chew safely.
- Children make little faces or colourful fruit plates from the pre-cut pieces. Not every portion needs a face: put the remaining fruit in a sharing bowl.
- An adult halves the oranges and puts the knife away. Children can slowly juice them under supervision with a stable manual juicer. Pour through the strainer and divide among 4 small glasses, about 100 ml each. No sugar is needed; offer water as well.
- An adult slices the cucumber, bread and rolls. Slice cheese thinly or use ready-sliced cheese. Children add cheese and cucumber to bread and rolls at the clear table.
- Set out small bowls, fruit plates, sandwiches and drinks. Refill dishes instead of crowding the table. Enjoy eating together without rushing; everyone takes an amount that suits their appetite.
- Promptly refrigerate remaining cheese and cut fruit. Keep melon pieces covered in the fridge and preferably eat them the same day. Store bread and rolls separately in a dry place.
A colourful breakfast to share slowly
Fruit, cucumber, wholegrain bread and cheese add variety to the table. Fresh orange juice is a small extra; water is the drink for thirst. Whole fruit pieces are part of the meal too. Depending on the season, use pears or other appropriately prepared fruit instead of strawberries. For a vegan version replace cheese with hummus or a suitable plant-based spread and check bread and rolls for milk, butter and honey; check hummus for sesame. Quantities are for an ordinary family kitchen; the small Wusel portions in the illustrations are artistic.
