Puschel & Flauschi’s Forest Discoveries

Why Does Moss Grow Here?

One stone wears a green cushion while another is almost bare. Puschel discovers a tiny forest of plants and asks why it grows here.

The green explorer’s magnifying glass with a leaf-shaped handle

Puschel and Flauschi study a green moss cushion on a stone. Flauschi holds the green magnifying glass above it. The moss stays untouched.
Many mosses grow well in damp, shady places. The moss cushion stays on its stone and is not used as a seat.

Beside a shady woodland path lay a stone with a green cushion. A brighter stone a little farther away was almost bare. Puschel stopped beside the green one.

Puschel“A woodland sofa! Just a little small for my tail.”

Flauschi knelt on the path, not on the cushion. She held the green magnifying glass a little way above it. Puschel knelt beside her. The green now looked like a tiny forest of many little plants.

Flauschi“This is moss. It is not a carpet to sit on. It is made of living plants. Look how closely the little green parts grow together.”

Flauschi explained that many mosses like damp places. Water often dries away more slowly in shade than in sunshine. That can help moss. But there are different mosses, and not all need exactly the same place.

Puschel“Then this cushion prefers a spot without sunburn.”
Flauschi“It often stays damp here. Mosses take in water through their surfaces. Fine threads help them hold on. They do not have roots like a big tree.”

Puschel looked at the brighter stone. Flauschi explained that comparing them gave clues, but could not prove everything. Water, light and the surface all mattered. Moss could grow on stones, wood and soil.

Puschel“Can the green at least show us the way home?”
Flauschi“No. Moss is not a reliable compass. It can grow on different sides. We will stay on the familiar path and leave the cushion where it is.”

Puschel pulled his tail back a little so it did not brush the moss. His imaginary sofa had become a tiny forest of plants. He needed no seat inside it to feel amazed.

What the two discovered

  • A moss cushion is made of lots of small plants. Mosses can grow on soil, stones and wood, among other places. There are many different kinds.

  • Many mosses like damp, shady places. Water often dries away more slowly there. But some mosses cope with drier or brighter places. “Moss only grows in shade” would be wrong.

  • Mosses can take in water through their surfaces. Fine threads hold them in place. These threads are not roots like a tree’s. Mosses also give tiny animals sheltered places.

  • Moss can grow on different sides of a stone or tree. It does not reliably show a direction. A compass is a tool that helps you find directions such as north and south; moss cannot replace it. We leave it untouched.

Explorer’s rule: Leave animals and plants in peace. Just watch and do not damage anything.
