How does a space capsule return to Earth?

A space capsule comes home. The Wusels follow its journey through Earth's atmosphere.

The Wusels examine a capsule model with a heat shield and folded model parachute.
A Wusel story to explore.

The short answer

A returning capsule changes its path to enter Earth's air. There it slows sharply and gets very hot. A heat shield protects it; later, parachutes can slow it further.

An imagined Wusel scene

Puschel and Flauschi investigate

Puschel attaches a parachute to the capsule model high in space. Flauschi orders the picture cards: change course, pass through the hot stage with protection, then open the parachute later. He moves his card to the right place.

Try explaining it

What protects the capsule during the hot re-entry stage?

Choose a), b) or c), then explain your choice.

  • a)Parachutes providing all protection in the hot early phase.
  • b)The engine removing all air in front of the heat shield.
  • c)A heat shield.

Correct: c): A heat shield.

Understand step by step

How it works – simply explained

How the steps connect
  1. The orbit is changed
  2. Air slows and heats
  3. More slowing follows

The orbit is changed

An orbiting capsule must first slow or redirect appropriately so its path enters denser air.

Air slows and heats

At high speed, air ahead is strongly compressed and heated. A heat shield protects the interior. Return is not simply slow falling.

More slowing follows

Many capsules use parachutes after sufficient initial slowing. Landing and recovery are carefully planned. Other spacecraft use different methods; a drawing shows one example.

Why the parachute is not the first protection

Initially, a returning capsule travels very fast. Air ahead is strongly compressed and heated; the heat shield protects it. Many capsules use parachutes only after sufficient slowing. Parachutes do not replace heat shields. Re-entry means returning into denser air layers, not suddenly appearing just above the ground.
