Is a pony simply a young horse?

Small size and young age are different things. A pony can already be fully grown.

The short answer

A pony is a horse of a small breed, not simply a young horse. A young horse is a foal. An adult pony is still a pony. Size and age therefore answer different questions.

An imagined Wusel scene

Puschel and Flauschi investigate

Puschel puts the adult pony with the foal cards. Flauschi reads its age and breed label with him. He moves it to the adults. They now have separate rows for small size and young age.

Look closely

In the museum gallery, Puschel and Flauschi examine a larger horse model and a smaller, sturdy pony model behind glass. Puschel holds a notebook; Flauschi points attentively towards the exhibit. Both models represent adults.

An example to help you understand

On permitted paper in the museum, draw two adult horse figures: one larger and one smaller. With adults add “adult horse” and “adult pony”. Draw a foal on another sheet. Then discuss what information besides picture size could help establish age. The drawings show no fixed size relationships.

Try explaining it

Is an adult pony still a pony?

Choose a), b) or c), then explain your choice.

  • a)Yes, pony describes a small type of horse, not young age.

Show the explanation

Explore in more detail

Here you will find longer explanations and further details. You can explore them together.

1. Pony and foal mean different things

A pony is a horse of a small breed. The word does not simply describe young age. A young horse is called a foal; ponies have foals too. An adult pony can therefore be smaller than a young horse of a large breed. Small in a picture does not automatically mean young. Our two museum models represent adult animals.

2. Company is an important need

Horses need suitable company from other horses. They should not be kept permanently alone in an individual paddock. Not every grouping is suitable: animals need to get along and have sufficient room to move away. Experienced people carefully supervise new groups. Many other animals in a picture do not automatically replace suitable horse company.

3. Feeding is more than a kind gesture

Forage is plant food, such as hay: dried grass. Roughage means fibre-rich plant food. Suitable forage, such as good hay, plays an important dietary role. What and how much a horse needs depends on its needs; specialists help plan this. Not every green plant is safe. Lawn clippings do not belong in horse feed. Even when an animal comes to a fence, give it no food you brought along.

4. Care needs several specialists

Good care includes daily observation and appropriate regular checks. Hooves need expert care, teeth suitable examinations, and sick or injured animals veterinary help. Behaviour changes may be a reason to contact the veterinary practice. We do not try to diagnose illness from a photograph or treat an animal ourselves.

An optional question for further exploration

You can use the longer explanation above. This is extra, not needed for the first quiz.

An extra question

Is every small pony a foal?

Discover the answer

No. Pony means a horse of a small breed; it can be an adult. Foal means a young horse. A pony can also be born as a foal and later grow into an adult without becoming as tall as a large horse.
