Discovering lettuce leaves

Puschel holds a harvested lettuce leaf like a fan. Puschel“My garden fan needs no plug!”

The short answer

We eat the leaves of garden lettuce. Hearting lettuce forms a denser head; loose-leaf lettuce has a more open rosette. Lettuce leaves can be green or reddish. Shape and colour depend on the variety.

An imagined Wusel scene

Puschel and Flauschi investigate

Flauschi shows him reddish leaves in the basket. Green lettuce heads and loose-leaf plants grow beside them.

Flauschi“Different leafy hairstyles,” she says. Puschel fans himself gently once. Then they set the harvested leaves aside for washing.

Understand

Connections

Loose-leaf lettuce can grow more leaves after careful harvesting of outer leaves if its centre remains intact.

Try explaining it

Which part of garden lettuce do we eat?

Choose a), b) or c), then explain your choice.

  • a)The leaves.
  • b)The underground storage root.
  • c)The seed-bearing fruits after flowering.
Show the explanation

Correct: a): The leaves.

We eat lettuce leaves. How closely they grow depends on the variety.

Word help
rosette
Leaves arranged closely around one centre rather than spread along a long stem.
Explore in more detail

Here you will find longer explanations and further details. You can explore them together.

Why should the centre stay intact?

Loose-leaf lettuce grows new leaves from its centre. Adults can harvest outer leaves carefully while preserving the centre, allowing more growth. Removing the whole growing point is different. Regrowth does not mean unlimited harvest without water, light and suitable conditions.

Compare and understand

Lettuce can flower too, producing a tall stem instead of just a compact leafy head. This is called bolting. Leaf vegetable describes the part harvested, not a plant incapable of flowering. Compare photographs before and after bolting and locate the growing centre.

An optional question for further exploration

You can use the longer explanation above. This is extra, not needed for the first quiz.

An extra question

How can loose-leaf lettuce continue growing after a harvest?

Show answer

If only some outer leaves are harvested and the centre is left intact, more leaves can grow.
