Discovering peas

Puschel and Flauschi open a harvested pod from their garden peas. A little green row sits inside.

The two Wusels examine an opened garden-pea pod beside a bed with a climbing support; the greenhouse is in the background.

The short answer

The green peas inside a pod are seeds. The pod itself is the plant’s fruit. Many pea plants use tendrils to grip a support. Their height varies with the variety.

An imagined Wusel scene

Puschel and Flauschi investigate

Puschel and Flauschi open a harvested pod from their garden peas. A little green row sits inside.

Puschel“They made a tidy queue,” Puschel says. Flauschi counts the seeds with him; this single pod is their little example.

They leave the next pod on the plant. Puschel waves to it. Puschel“You can keep growing. The queue is not going anywhere.”

Explore in more detail

Here you will find longer explanations and further details. You can explore them together.

What grows from one pea?

A pea is a seed. After taking up water, it can grow a root when warmth and air are suitable. The young plant initially uses stored food in the seed. Later, green leaves use light to make sugar. The pod is the fruit containing several such seeds.

Compare and understand

With an adult, open only a known culinary pea pod and count its seeds. Mangetout is eaten with the young pod, while shelling peas are removed from theirs. Ornamental sweet peas are not substitutes. Similar pods do not imply equal edibility; do not collect unknown roadside pods.
