VegetarianPuschel’s Sweet Waffles with Fruit
Mix a simple butter and milk batter and bake in batches in a waffle iron. Serve with fresh fruit and plain yogurt.
The little story
The Upside-Down Heart
Baked, cooled heart waffles lay on the kitchen table. Puschel slowly turned a heart section between his paws. Flauschi held a bowl of washed fruit.
Puschel„Why is my heart pointing up?“
Flauschi„Because you put it upside down.“
Puschel turned it over. Now the point faced down. He looked very thoughtful.
Puschel„Now it is right. But did it taste different before?“
Flauschi„You can investigate with a little bite.“
Puschel put it on his plate and added yogurt. Flauschi giggled when he turned it once more.
Puschel„I am doing a thorough heart check.“
Flauschi„Do not forget the fruit.“
They added small strawberry pieces and banana slices. Puschel tasted and nodded.
Puschel„It tastes like waffle from both sides.“
Flauschi laughed. For a little kitchen puzzle, that was a wonderfully simple answer.

Makes about 8 heart waffles: 4 portions
How to make it
In a few words: Mix a simple butter and milk batter and bake in batches in a waffle iron. Serve with fresh fruit and plain yogurt.
Ingredients
- 100 g softened butter
- 50 g sugar
- 8 g vanilla sugar
- 2 medium eggs
- 250 g plain wheat flour
- 2 level tsp baking powder (about 8 g)
- 250 ml milk
- A small pinch of salt
- 1–2 tsp rapeseed oil for lightly greasing the waffle iron
- To serve: 300 g fresh fruit, such as strawberries and banana, and 200 g plain yogurt
Method
- Wash hands. Weigh ingredients and get equipment ready. Adults handle knives, graters, tin openers, mixers, the hob, oven and all hot containers.
- Mix butter, sugar, vanilla sugar and salt. An adult may use a mixer. Add eggs one at a time. Mix flour with baking powder, then briefly mix in alternately with milk until smooth. Avoid prolonged mixing.
- Rest batter for 10 minutes. Meanwhile wash fruit; an adult removes stalks or peel and cuts suitable bite-sized pieces. Keep yogurt cool. Never taste raw waffle batter.
- An adult places the waffle iron securely on a heatproof surface. Keep its cord out of reach of young children. Preheat to medium heat following the manual and lightly oil if needed.
- For a first heart waffle use about 80–100 g batter; exact quantity and time depend on the appliance. Close without forcing the lid. Do not overfill. A waffle often takes 3–4 minutes. Hot steam escapes at the sides: children keep clear.
- Open only once batter has set. Lift a golden waffle out with a suitable non-metal utensil. The centre must be baked through with no wet raw layer; cook longer if needed. Cook remaining batter in batches, about eight waffles depending on the appliance.
- Cool waffles briefly, separately on a rack, to prevent steaming them soft. Serve with fruit and yogurt. Give young children suitably small soft pieces, not large whole berries or grapes. An adult unplugs the appliance and lets it cool safely.
