Puschel’s Funny Mashed-Potato Face with Vienna Sausages

Creamy mashed potatoes with warm Vienna sausages, peas and carrots—served as a funny face that Puschel cannot wait to eat.

The little story

The Smile on the Plate

The Wusel kitchen smelled of warm potatoes and butter. Puschel sat at the table, bouncing his paws with anticipation while Flauschi spooned the creamy mash onto their plates.

Puschel“It smells so good that my tummy is about to start bouncing too.”

Flauschi shaped the mashed potato into a flat circle. Puschel added two peas for eyes and curved a strip of carrot into a smiling mouth.

Flauschi“Now your dinner is smiling at you.”

Puschel studied the potato face and made the same enormous grin. Then he added two tiny carrot pieces like freckles.

Puschel“That makes it look a little more playful. Almost like me.”

Flauschi placed the warm Vienna sausages neatly beside the mash and scattered a few peas and carrot pieces around the face. Puschel held his paws close to his chest with delight and could hardly wait for the first bite.

Flauschi“The potato face seems just as excited about dinner as you are.”

They both laughed. Then they shared the vegetables, cut the sausages into suitable pieces and enjoyed their cheerful potato dinner together.

How to make it

In a few words: Boil and mash potatoes. Serve with warmed sausages and optional vegetables.

Ingredients

  • 1 kg floury potatoes
  • 250 ml milk
  • 40 g butter
  • 1/2 tsp salt, plus salt for the cooking water
  • A little freshly grated nutmeg
  • 8 Vienna sausages
  • Optional: a little finely chopped parsley
  • Optional: 300 g peas or carrots to serve

Method

  1. Peel the potatoes and cut them into similarly sized pieces. An adult handles the peeling and cutting.
  2. Put the potato pieces into a saucepan, just cover with cold water and add a little salt. Bring to the boil and cook for about 15–20 minutes until tender, depending on their size.
  3. Meanwhile, warm the Vienna sausages in a second saucepan of hot water that is not bubbling, for about 5–8 minutes. An adult supervises the hob.
  4. Drain the soft potatoes and let them steam dry briefly. Carefully warm the milk and butter without boiling.
  5. Mash the potatoes with a potato masher. Gradually stir in the warm milk and butter until creamy. Season with salt and a little nutmeg.
  6. If using peas or carrots, cook them following the packet instructions. Divide the mash between four plates. For young children, adults cut sausages lengthways into quarters, then into short pieces rather than round slices. Add the vegetables and let cool slightly.
