The little story

Puschel and the Great Pasta Turning Break

Two plates of finished ham pasta waited on the kitchen table. The egg was fully cooked and the food had cooled to a comfortable temperature. Carrot–apple salad waited beside it. Puschel and Flauschi stood on the floor beside their empty chairs.

Puschel„I watched carefully when we cooked. The pasta needs turning!“

He picked up his plate and held it steady with one paw. With the other, he speared one spiral on his fork and gently turned it over the plate.

Puschel„Half a turn. Another half. Done! Next spiral!“
Flauschi„What are you doing?“
Puschel„Pasta care. Each one needs to see the other side.“

Flauschi looked at his full plate, then at the single spiral. The corners of her mouth twitched.

Flauschi„We stirred everything together in the pan. You do not have to turn each spiral separately.“
Puschel„Everything together? Even the curly ones?“
Flauschi„Even the curly ones. A spatula gently mixes pasta, ham and egg.“
Puschel„Doesn’t that make the pasta dizzy?“
Flauschi„Pasta does not get dizzy. But you might if you keep turning until tonight.“

Puschel held his fork still and carefully examined the spiral.

Puschel„This one already looks all twisted.“
Flauschi„It looked like that before. That is its shape.“

Puschel sighed with relief and set the spiral back on his plate.

Puschel„Then it gets a turning break!“
Flauschi„And we get a lunch break.“
Puschel holds his plate of finished ham pasta and lets his fork point downwards; Flauschi laughs. Both stand equally tall on the clear floor in front of the fixed kitchen table.
A turning break for pasta, a lunch break for Wusels.

Puschel put his plate back on the table. Then they tasted the cooled food. Puschel took a small spoonful of carrot–apple salad.

Puschel„I had better not turn the salad. It is small enough already.“
Flauschi„Very sensible, Mr Pasta Turner.“

Puschel grinned. His fork had just one task left: taking the next delicious bite to his mouth.

Preparation: about 15 min · Pasta cooking and two frying-pan batches: about 25 min · Total: about 40 min. Allow longer with only one hob. Doneness and packet instructions take priority.

4 portions with carrot–apple salad

How to make it

In a few words: Cook pasta spirals with cooked ham and fully set egg in two frying-pan batches. Serve with finely grated carrot–apple salad.

Ingredients

  • For the pasta: 300 g dry wheat pasta spirals
  • 200 g cooked pork ham (ready-to-eat cooked ham, not raw cured ham)
  • 4 medium eggs
  • 1 small onion (about 80 g)
  • 2 tbsp rapeseed oil for frying, 1 tbsp per batch
  • ¼ tsp salt and a little mild pepper for the pasta
  • Optional: 1 tbsp washed, finely chopped parsley to sprinkle on top
  • Water and salt for boiling pasta according to the packet
  • For the salad: 400 g carrots
  • 1 apple (about 150 g)
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp rapeseed oil
  • 1–2 tbsp water for the salad

Method

  1. Wash hands and prepare the ingredients. An adult peels the onion and finely dices it. Cut the cooked ham into small cubes. Set pasta and ham aside; keep ham chilled until needed.
  2. Thoroughly wash carrots and apple. An adult peels carrots, cores the apple and finely grates both. Mix with lemon juice, 1 tbsp oil and 1–2 tbsp water. Cover and refrigerate until serving. Keep children’s fingers away from the sharp grater.
  3. Bring water to a boil in a large saucepan. Add salt and pasta according to the packet. Cook until soft enough to eat. An adult carefully drains it in a colander: water and steam are hot. Drain well.
  4. Cook in two batches in a frying pan about 28 cm wide. Divide cooked pasta, onion, ham, salt and pepper into two equal amounts. This leaves room for stirring and helps the egg cook evenly. An adult now preheats the oven to 80°C conventional for briefly keeping the first batch warm.
  5. Immediately before each batch, crack 2 eggs into a small bowl and beat with a fork to mix white and yolk. Do not taste raw egg. Wash hands after touching eggs or shells; keep shells and used bowls away from salad and cooked food.
  6. An adult heats 1 tbsp oil over medium heat. Cook half the onion gently for about 3–4 minutes until soft. Add half the ham and fry for about 1 minute. Add half the pasta and heat for about 2 minutes, stirring. Lower the heat if anything browns too much.
  7. Add the 2 beaten eggs and half the salt and pepper. Cook over medium to low heat for about 3–5 minutes, regularly loosening the mixture from the pan bottom and stirring with a spatula. All egg must be firm, with no liquid or translucent patches. An adult checks that every part reaches at least 70°C for 2 minutes. Cook longer if needed; time alone is not a doneness test.
  8. Transfer the first cooked batch into a clean ovenproof dish and keep warm in an oven preheated to 80°C conventional while cooking the second batch. Adults use oven gloves. Repeat with the remaining oil, onion, ham, pasta, 2 freshly beaten eggs and seasoning; fully cook the egg again.
  9. Divide both batches between four plates, sprinkle with parsley if wished and serve with salad. Eat freshly cooked and let everything cool to a comfortable temperature before tasting. Prepare suitably small bites for young children.

Equipment

Large saucepan, colander, frying pan (about 28 cm), spatula, two small egg bowls, salad bowl, knife, board, grater, food thermometer, clean ovenproof dish and oven gloves

Allergens and shopping

wheat/gluten and egg; actual cooked ham and pasta may contain other allergens, including dairy ingredients. Check actual ingredient labels and family allergies.

Without pork

Replace the 200 g cooked pork ham with 200 g ready-to-eat cooked poultry ham explicitly free from pork ingredients. Check the label for pork ingredients and dairy. This is not halal certification. Still fully cook the egg.

Vegetarian vegetable version

Omit the ham. Use 200 g washed, finely diced courgette instead. In each batch, gently cook 100 g courgette after the onion for about 5–7 minutes until tender, then add pasta and egg as directed. Add 1 tbsp water if needed. This separate version is vegetarian but contains egg and is not vegan. Allow about 10 extra minutes.

Quantities and method were checked editorially against cooking references. These are our own family versions; no practical cooking test has been carried out. Times are estimates; doneness and product instructions take precedence.
