Puschel’s Wusel Workshop

Puschel’s Bird Feeder

A clean drink carton becomes a small, sheltered feeding place for garden birds for a short time.

Puschel paints green leaves on a prepared drink carton in the Wusel workshop while Flauschi fits the wooden perch

The little Wusel story

Puschel was painting the third green leaf on the carton when Flauschi carefully fitted the prepared perch. Flauschi“Now we only need a guest,” she whispered. Outside, an adult hung the finished feeder securely from a strong branch. Puschel was about to call, Puschel“Breakfast!” but Flauschi lifted one paw to her mouth. Together, they waited as quietly as mice. Soon, a great tit landed on the little perch and pecked at the first seed. Puschel beamed. Puschel“Our tiniest Wusel café is open!”

What you need

  • one empty drink carton, thoroughly rinsed and completely dried
  • non-toxic outdoor-suitable craft paint and a broad brush
  • one short smooth untreated wooden stick for the perch
  • strong natural cord for hanging
  • a small amount of suitable wild-bird seed
  • a wipe-clean table mat

How it works

  1. An adult cuts one large feeding opening, safely covers every cut edge and prepares the holes for the perch and cord.
  2. Paint leaves or your own woodland patterns on the outside of the carton. Let the paint dry completely.
  3. An adult fits the perch, secures the cord and checks that the feeder hangs steadily.
  4. Add only a small amount of suitable bird food. Bread and salty or seasoned foods do not belong in the feeder.
  5. Hang it in a cat-safe place near protective shrubs. Check it every day and replace it as soon as the carton becomes damp, dirty or damaged.

Adult help: Adults handle cutting, piercing holes and hanging, choose suitable wild-bird food and find a cat-safe location. Add only a little food, remove damp or dirty food immediately and wash hands afterwards. The drink carton is a short-term observation feeder and must be replaced if it becomes wet or dirty.
