Why do we need sleep?

Puschel wants to keep playing, but notices that he is tired.

Puschel yawns beside wooden blocks on the picnic blanket while Flauschi quietly helps tidy up.
A Wusel story to explore.

The short answer

Sleep supports health, learning and memory. Your body keeps working: heart and breathing do not stop. A restful daytime break can help, but does not replace needed sleep.

An imagined Wusel scene

Puschel and Flauschi investigate

Early in the evening, the two play with large wooden blocks on their picnic blanket. Puschel wants to build another row, but a block slips from his paw.

Puschel“My next idea is awake. The rest of me is yawning.”

Flauschi“Then the idea can wait until tomorrow.” Together they put the blocks in their box.

Puschel“Does the body switch everything off at night?” Flauschi“In people, no. The heart and breathing keep working. Sleep also helps learning and memory.”

Puschel puts away the last block. Puschel“Tomorrow is another Wusel day.” Flauschi nods. Neither needs to make tiredness disappear.

Understand step by step

How it works – simply explained

How the steps connect
  1. The body is not switched off
  2. Learning is processed
  3. Regular rest matters

The body is not switched off

You keep breathing, the heart beats and the brain works during sleep. Sleep is a special bodily state, not simply doing nothing.

Learning is processed

The brain handles information during sleep too. Sleep supports the strengthening of memories. A practised task may feel more familiar after a night, though this is not guaranteed.

Regular rest matters

Tiredness often makes concentration harder. A quiet play break may help but cannot replace enough sleep. Adults can help establish a suitable sleep routine.

In children, sleep also supports growth and development. Sleep is more than a break from playing; regular opportunities to sleep are one of our needs.
