Recognising a Silver Birch
Who is wearing a white coat? Puschel spots the birch’s pale bark. Flauschi shows which leaves belong to this special tree.

The short answer
A silver birch leaf is triangular to diamond-shaped, with a pointed tip and many tiny teeth along its edge. Its striking white bark has dark horizontal marks. Near the base of an older birch, the bark can become black and cracked.

An imagined Wusel scene
Puschel and Flauschi investigate
Puschel sees only the dark base of an old trunk and doubts it is birch. Flauschi looks higher: the bark is white with dark marks. They also compare the toothed leaves. Not every part of a trunk looks alike.

The fruit
Tiny winged nutlets come loose from the hanging fruiting catkins. Each contains a seed. The wind carries the fruits away.

Three tree clues
How does a birch reach open ground?
Birches produce many tiny winged fruits that wind can carry away. Bright, open ground may provide suitable conditions for germination. Birches are pioneer trees: they can be among the early trees to establish in open places. A pioneer tree is not deliberately setting off to explore.
Compare and understand
White bark alone is not enough for identification: young and old trunks look different. Compare leaf outlines and fruit clusters too. Bark protects the tree; it is not paper to peel off. Leave it on the trunk and examine fallen leaves instead.
