How can hearing aids help people hear?

The enlarged hearing aid is a museum model. It shows microphone, electronics and sound output; real devices may look different.

The short answer

The hearing aid explained here uses a microphone to pick up sound. Electronics process the signals and amplify suitable parts. A tiny speaker sends sound into the ear. Settings are adapted to the person.

Hearing aids can help, but do not make everyone hear alike or cure every hearing difficulty.

See how it works

Arrows show a direction or change. Sizes and distances are simplified. Read in order; each explanation belongs to the picture above it.

  1. 1. Pick up sound

A microphone responds to sound waves and changes them into electrical signals. It does not by itself understand the words being spoken.

  2. 2. Process appropriately

The aid changes signals according to its settings. Some pitch ranges may be amplified more than others. This is more precise than one volume knob for everything.

  3. 3. Produce sound

A tiny speaker sends processed sound towards the ear. Aids come in different forms; not every hearing aid sits visibly behind the ear.

  4. 4. Communicate together

A quieter setting, facing the person and speaking clearly can also help. Ask what they need. Simply shouting louder is not always the right answer.

An imagined Wusel scene

Puschel and Flauschi investigate

Puschel wants to turn everything up on the museum model. Flauschi compares its different sound ranges. He discovers that suitable settings and a quiet conversation matter more than maximum volume.

Word help

Microphone
A component changing sound into electrical signals.
Amplify
Make a signal stronger; settings need not affect every part equally.

Your activity

Point out where sound is picked up, processed and produced in the diagram. Talk about reducing extra noise during conversations. No volume test is needed.

Quiz: understand the idea

What changes signals between the microphone and tiny speaker?

Choose a), b) or c), then explain your choice.

  • a)The cable alone, without electronic processing.
  • b)The ear before the microphone picks up sound.
  • c)The appropriately set electronics.
Show the explanation

Correct: c): The appropriately set electronics.

The microphone receives, electronics process and the speaker produces sound again.

Try a new example

Someone struggles to understand you despite a hearing aid. What is a useful first step?

Choose a), b) or c), then explain your choice.

  • a)Ask what helps and reduce distracting noise where possible.
  • b)Immediately speak very loudly and very quickly.
  • c)Immediately adjust their device without asking.
Show the explanation

Correct: a): Ask what helps and reduce distracting noise where possible.

Needs vary. Consideration and asking help; other people keep control of their own devices.

Different ways of hearing

Some people use other technologies, sign language or several approaches together. A cochlear implant works differently from the aid explained here. Seeing a device does not tell you all of someone’s abilities or wishes.
