Discovering edible pumpkins

The short answer

A pumpkin or squash develops from a flower and contains seeds. Shapes and colours vary beyond round orange pumpkins. Adults distinguish edible and ornamental kinds; do not taste unknown squashes.

An imagined Wusel scene

Puschel and Flauschi investigate

The orange edible pumpkin rests on straw and is still attached by its sturdy stalk. Flauschi traces a circle in the air with her paws.

Flauschi“Almost as round as my tummy,” she laughs. They leave the stalk intact and let the pumpkin keep maturing. An adult will join them for harvesting later.

Discover

A pumpkin is a botanical fruit that develops from a flower. Its seeds are inside.

Understand

Garden pumpkins belong to several plant species. Our orange example is an edible Cucurbita pepo pumpkin; not all pumpkins are orange or round.

Connections

Many pumpkin plants form long trailing stems. Edible pumpkins intended for storage are left to mature on the plant and harvested before frost.

Little Wusel quiz

Can you eat every attractive pumpkin or gourd?

Show answer

No. Ornamental gourds are not food. Adults select positively identified edible pumpkins; bitter-tasting ones must not be eaten.

Why is not every beautiful pumpkin edible?

Cucurbits include different species and varieties. Edible selections differ from ornamental gourds. Some contain poisonous bitter compounds called cucurbitacins. Heating does not make such fruit safe. Colour, shape and an attractive skin cannot reliably establish edibility.

Compare and understand

An edible pumpkin is a fruit developing from a flower, with seeds inside. Leaves make sugar using light, helping it grow; soil does not pump it up from within. Examine a known pumpkin half prepared by an adult to locate the fruit wall, cavity and seeds.
