The Ghost That Wanted to Wave

Blue Puschel and orange Flauschi stand at equal height beside the low garden table. Puschel holds a friendly paper ghost with an enormous waving paw, while Flauschi holds a smaller one. The whole pumpkin sits beside them.
An oversized waving paw turns Puschel’s paper ghost into a cheerful welcome.

Yesterday’s party plan was still on the garden table. Beside it sat the little pumpkin with the curved stalk. Puschel ran a paw over the paper.

Flauschi‘Twenty-eight days,’ said Flauschi. Flauschi‘Today our first paper ghost can come off the plan.’

Puschel peered underneath the sheet. Puschel‘But it isn’t sitting on it.’

Flauschi‘I mean we’ll make one,’ Flauschi explained, laughing.

They put two pieces of white paper beside the plan. Flauschi drew a round ghost’s head, two eyes and a little waving paw. Puschel drew a head too. Then came the waving paw.

It grew big.

And bigger.

When Puschel put down his pencil, the paw was almost as wide as the whole ghost.

Flauschi‘Yours can wave a very long way,’ said Flauschi.

Puschel looked at his drawing. Puschel‘Perhaps it wants to say hello to the pumpkin. And the fence. And the tree behind it.’

They carefully cut out their ghosts. Afterwards they closed the scissors, put them aside and gathered up the scraps of paper.

Flauschi held up her little ghost. Puschel raised his beside it. The enormous paper paw wobbled and folded over its face.

Puschel‘Now it can’t see anything,’ he murmured.

Flauschi giggled. Flauschi‘A ghost waving to itself.’

Puschel held the paper a little further down. The big waving paw stood upright again.

Puschel‘That works,’ he said. Puschel‘This isn’t a startling ghost. It’s a hello ghost.’

Flauschi nodded. Flauschi‘Then it needs a friendly face.’

They drew a little smile on each ghost. Puschel tried a quiet Puschel‘Hello’ to go with it. His ghost waved at the pumpkin. Flauschi’s waved back.

Puschel‘Can the big paw stay?’ asked Puschel.

Flauschi‘Of course,’ said Flauschi. Flauschi‘It belongs at our party now.’

Together they fixed the two paper ghosts side by side to a low part of the garden fence, just behind the table. They kept the path clear. Anyone who wanted to come to the party would be able to see them easily.

A gentle breeze stirred the paper. The little waving paw trembled. The big one waved a little further.

Puschel waved back.

Puschel‘It’s already saying hello to me,’ he said.

Flauschi‘To me too,’ said Flauschi.

An idea on their plan had become their first decoration. And it could even say hello without a single word.

Your little family idea

Draw a friendly ghost with a tiny or enormous waving paw. You can keep it as a drawing or ask an adult to help you cut it out. Wave hello to each other with it – a quiet hello is enough.

For adults: Children can simply draw their ghost. An adult should supervise cutting and handle tricky parts. Use age-appropriate scissors, put them away afterwards and hang paper decorations where they leave paths clear. Nobody has to be startled.
