A Window Greeting

A large sheet of paper lay on the low table. Two coloured pencils waited beside it. Puschel looked at the paper from one side, then the other. PuschelPuschel: “It doesn’t seem very talkative yet.” Flauschi slid the red pencil towards him. FlauschiFlauschi: “Perhaps it needs a friendly face first.”
They wanted to draw a picture that could smile at somebody through a window one day. It did not have to hang anywhere today. First it could take shape on the table, between their paws and the two mugs.
Puschel began with a round sun. One ray grew very long, while another stayed rather short. PuschelPuschel: “I think it has only just woken up too.” Flauschi smiled and added a flower. Its leaves pointed in different directions, as though the autumn wind had tugged at them.
Then they both paused. Puschel had turned the sheet a little to reach the edge more easily. Now the sun was looking at Flauschi sideways. PuschelPuschel: “Our greeting is doing a headstand.” FlauschiFlauschi: “Then let’s turn it back towards us.” Together they moved the paper until they could see the smile properly.
Their picture did not have to be perfectly round. A crooked ray and a wonky petal could stay. FlauschiFlauschi: “I think people will see that we mean it kindly.” Puschel nodded. PuschelPuschel: “And the sun doesn’t even need an envelope.”
They put the pencils beside the sheet and admired their little greeting. Autumn trees glowed beyond the round windows. For now, the picture stayed safely on the table. When they looked for a suitable place later, they would think together about who might enjoy seeing it.
Your little preparation
If you like, draw a little friendly greeting: a sun, a flower or something entirely your own. Think together about whom you might show it to later. It does not have to be tidy or finished.
For adults: Offer age-appropriate pencils and a surface within easy reach. Choose any window spot together with an adult; never climb on furniture or windowsills. The picture can simply stay on the table.
